❥NEW!! Chattanooga Coupon Forum

Telling+a+secret

Alright gals (and the occasional guy).  I think we could get a good thing going by starting a Couponers Grapevine of sorts. Just leave a comment when you find something you want to tell us all!

  • Got a deal?  Share it!
  • Heard a deal was dead?  Break the news.
  • Want to warn us all about that one CVS that hates couponers?  Warn Away!!!
  • Found a great clearance deal at the grocery today?  Give us the scoop!

I know this page thing isn’t the best system for a forum that may end up with multiple topics.  But until I work out the kinks, consider it a meeting place for local cheapskate chatter!

    Okay, to get things rolling…
The Publix in Ooltewah will not accept Food Lion “$2 Off $5 Produce” Coupons or ANY coupons which aren’t specifying a particular product. Does anyone know if any of the Chattanooga Publix take these kind of vague coupons?

I shop at the Publix on Cassandra Smith Road, off hyy. 153, all the time.I’ve used all of my Food Lion coupons there; even the meat & produce coupons. Unless this is a new issue, I’ve never been given any problems by anyone about them.

Ok, I thought of something…someone told me recently that if you go to Wal-mart at 9 PM they put their whole rotisserie chickens (that are normally about 5$) on sale fof 2$. The woman who told this to me is a great cook and she gets the chicken and freezes it to use in soups, etc. I think you have to get there right at 9 because they go fast.

This is Awesome! I’ve seen so many recipes on Allrecipes that call for shredding up a rotisserie chicken- and I’m always like, sure….. Thanks Emily!

Thanks for starting this site just for us Chatt town girls!

I used my 2/5 produce coupon at Publix yesterday. It was just some young teenage boy that took it (they are the best about coupons).

    Hi Jamie,

I found your blog from your comments on SouthernSavers. I think this is going to be so much fun sharing information with Chatt. area couponers! I’ve been couponing for about 4 years now. When I started, I never saw anyone else in the stores with coupons. It does seem it is on the rise with sites like yours and SouthSavers.

As for your ? about the produce coupons at Publix, I think it may depend on your cashier, time of day, day of the week, etc., on whether these will or will not be accepted. Fuzzy I know. At my Bi-Lo store it seems most of the employees don’t know the coupon policy, especially the managers! But it has gotten a lot easier using coupons there than when I first started.

Oh guys- thanks for jumping into the forum – I’m so hoping it will take off! I guess it really does depend on your cashier about the FLIP produce/meat coupons. Maybe I’ll stop by customer service on my way in next time to check. And kelly- thank you so much for mentioning me to your friends! It’s exciting that so many are getting fired up about saving money for their families- the Recession-Era Housewife Makes a Comeback!!!

I’m going out today on my first venture of using competitors coupons at Publix. I use the Hixson store. Wish me luck! I hear they are amazing there!!!

Good Luck Abbie!! If you’re at all nervous about any of them (noone likes to hold up a line over a coupon) just stop by the Customer Service Desk on your way in, and say something like “I just want to check and make sure you will accept all of these coupons before I start shopping.” That way if they don’t accept one (Say a $5 off $25 Rite-Aid coupon, or a $2 Off $5 Produce from Food Lion) you can take that into account when you’re loading up your buggy! Hope all goes well for you – Jamie

Well, I read alot of the comment sections on Southern Savers- and in MANY places, Publix will take those Rite-Aid coupons, as well as Register Rewards from Walgreens! The Ooltewah Publix is not one of those, but who knows, maybe the Hixson one is? Anyone know if they take them? Abbie- how’d it go?

Ladies, I did amazing tonight. I ended up at Publix with a total bill of $99.33, but only spent $20.03 OOP. 80% savings! They were amazing there. They took all of my competitor coupon with no problem. (Target and FLIP) Being that I was forced to take my 2 girls with me this time (2 1/2 and 7 months), they got tired very fast and the baby got super fussy at checkout. The girls at checkout were so sweet and helpful. One even pushed my buggy out and not only put my groceries up, but also put my purse and coupon binder in the front seat while I was strapping the girls in their car seats. I will be calling a mgr tomorrow and letting him know how pleased I was.

Once the hubby came and rescued the girls, I hit Bi-Lo alone. Did great there too. Total bill was $58.87, and I spent $17.16 OOP. that’s 71% savings.

Jamie, is there anywhere to post pics? I’d love to post my shopping photos so you can see everything I got, b/c it was ALOT!

Regarding Rite Aid, Hixson Publix will not take their $5 off $25 coupon. The manager told me that is not considered a competitors coupon. Also, I went Hixson Publix last night and the cashier (a young male) would not take my Food Lion $2 off $5 produce coupon. I ask for the manager because I have never had a problem with a Food Lion coupon. The customer service lady came over and she said yes, we can take those. At that time the manager came up and said yes we take all Foodlion coupons. He said they have had problems with people copying the coupons and tring to use them. He said mine were just fine.

Well, after looking over my receipt, Bi-Lo owes me $1.39 b/c something didn’t ring up right which brings my OOP down to $15.77 and the savings up to 73%. You bet your boots I’m going back in to get my money….lol.

Hello! Nice to see some Chattanooga area talk specifically. I live in Dayton, but do the majority of my shopping in Hixson, Chattanooga, Athens, Cleveland, with the decision being based on which area has the best cumulative deals for a particular week. I am very familiar with the Hixson Publix, and I can say with a good bit of certainty that, unless something has changed during the past week, they will take FLIPS for $2/$5 produce (this is the only one of these I ever use) and they will not take Target, Rite-Aid, Walgreen’s, or CVS coupons, as they do not consider them to be competitors. This was told to me by the assistant manager and the CS manager. I hope this helps!

    • July 6, 2009 1:21 pm

Thanks for the tip about the Hixson Publix- do you know if they STILL take those FLIPS or if they’re changing over as well? Also- how is the Hixson Bi-Lo about competitor coupons? Thanks again!-jamie

Hey, Great to see a Chattanooga specific site up and running! I shop at the East Brainerd Publix and Bi-Lo. I was told by the CS manager that Publix will take any of the FLIPS, the rest (Target, Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens) seems to depend upon the mood of the cashier. I have asked the managers, and each seems to have a different answer! I usually just ask the cashier when checking out, and opt out of purchasing items if they do not accept the coupons. Do any of the local Publix take the CVS bucks or Walgreens RR?

        July 7, 2009 9:10 pm

The last time I tried, they said they were no longer allowing compteitor coupons. They do have a coupon booklet as you enter the store that lately have had coupons for the sale items that can be stacked with a manufacturer coupon to add up to bigger savings! Also, don’t forget to log onto your online Bi-Lo Bonus account for more coupons.

This is just my second week in the couponing world, but glad to say that last week I was able to save about $80 on our total grocery bill at Bi-Lo and Publix. I’m building my coupons (and organizing the binder), so hope to have more and more savings to show! After adding it all up, our family spends about $700/month on groceries/diapers/toiletries, so we desperately needed to make changes..I shop the Hixson Publix/Bi-Lo and Food Lion..Does anyone know if the Bi-Lo in Hixson normally takes the Publix coupons/printables (Kraft)? My hubby tried one last week from the Publix Advantage book and the cashier wouldn’t take it. I also haven’t been able to find the elusive Family Coupon book at Publix..Thanks so much for all the helpful tips!

    • July 6, 2009 1:24 pm

LeAnn, are you talking about the IP Kraft Q’s the say “redeem at Publix”? If so, the Hixson Bi-Lo won’t take them. If you notice at the top of them, they say retailer coupon instead of manufacturer coupon. They consider is a Publix coupon and won’t take them. I wish Bi-Lo took competitor coupons. That would be great!

Ladies, I just stopped by into Publix tonight to get the penney item which was Publix Apple Juice. We go through ALOT of apple juice so I htought it was worth another trip. I prepared a few more coupons and ended up saving 88% this time. My bill was $62.37 and I paid $7.42 OOP. The cashier couldn’t believe it. I’m telling you, they are awesome there. I have NEVER had one problem with any of my coupons. However, I’ve only tried usinf FLIPS and Target coupons. Even though I haven’t tried personally, I heard they will not except Walgreens and CVS, b/c they don’t consider them a competitor. Hmm…I do the same as Amy and always ask before I let them ring it up just to make sure but so far so good.

Hey to all the savvy savers here and in the Hixson Publix tonight!

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Publix in Hixson took my Target q for the Charmin t.p. tonight. I stacked the Target Q and the manf. Q for a total $1.00 off. I asked at the c.s. desk to make sure before I shopped. I showed her both of the Qs and she stated specifically that I could “stack” the two Q’s! I wonder if this may be a case of YMMV?

I have a small problem with my receipt though and I’m debating whether to take it and have them adjust it. The cashier didn’t give me credit for one Q and on another free Q she didn’t deduct the correct amount. I’m not sure it’s worth the trip back– being too pushy, and I just hate being pushy.

Also, ran into at least three other binder shoppers! It’s fun to see others doing the same thing that I’m trying to do. Since I’ve been couponing (for the last 3 or 4 years), I’ve never seen so many shoppers with q’s and binders!

    Happy Saving to All!

    Hello, Ladies!

I went to Publix in Ooltewah on Sunday and wanted to post an update. They would not take my 2$ off 5$ produce from Food Lion, as I already suspected. However, as I was walking the aisles with my 5 month old son, the assistant manager of the deli walked up and asked if I wanted a free rotisserie chicken no charge! Well, you know what we had for dinner that night! It was soooo yummy! Maybe if was my adorable son that grabbed her attention. 🙂

Not counting the rotisserie chicken I saved about 60%. My goal is to always save at least 50% so I was happy.

A friend of mine got FREE artichoke and spinach dip from the deli at the Ooltewah Publix on Saturday. It expired on Sunday but she said it was so good it wouldn’t last until Sunday anyway. I may have to start spending more time in the deli!

      • July 1, 2009 9:17 am

Okay- I went to Publix last night, and asked about the Rotisserie chickens: Apparently if they are about to “Expire” at any point, rather than toss them they give them away. The ones that were there last night didn’t “expire” until 9:50, so no free chickens for me 😦 But with that deal and Stacey’s report on free dip….I’m thinking it’s a good idea to stroll by the deli ANYTIME you go to Publix!!

An idea for bread for those of you who live in Cleveland…
I always stop by the Little Debbie store Mondays and Thursdays after 3 PM to pick up our bread products (this is when they get their shipment in and the bread is freshest). All of their bread products are only $1.39 and they sell the following:
    packs of english muffins
packs of blueberry bagels and other varieties
pizza crust….sometimes the large and sometimes packs of 2 or 3 small ones (my girls LOVE to make their own pizzas!)
all kinds of bread…whole wheat, white, etc.

Next to the register is a container of free samples so my girls love to go with me to get bread for the week because they get to pick out a free sample. It is so funny how such a little thing becomes such a hit with kids!

I was at BiLo (corner of Ooltewah-Ringgold road and E.Brainerd) yesterday and they had blinkies for any Hefty OneZip for $1 off; already BIGI so you can get all your baggies for just $.50 a box… or you can drive over to FL where they were also on sale (can’t remember exactly how much but it would save you a few pennies).
Also, I’ve been couponing now for just over a month and have SLASHED my grocery budget in half! I’m excited to see how much more I can save. And thanks SO MUCH for the Veggie Tales link b/c we loooove those silly veggies.

Thanks so much Jamie! Great to have this area to post! Just wondering if anyone has tried the super doubles at K-mart this week? They are getting stricter.

Also has anyone checked out the bread store in Cleveland – South Lee Hwy?
Great tip about the Little Debbie Store- I forget it is here.
Also wondering if anyone has tried Aldi’s? I know there is one at the corner of East Brainerd and Brainerd Road in Chatt town.
Any other “outlet” stores for products?

I am full of questions but figured this is the place and people who would know!

    • July 6, 2009 1:27 pm

I had NO IDEA there was an Aldi’s around here! I might have to try a trip soon. Thanks for the tips about the bread stores Tara and Emily- they’re both great! I know it’s not fair to non-Clevelanders, but besides the cheap bread-stores around here, you can also get $1.99 milk at the gas station on Keith St. that is right across from the Dairy Kreme. The sell a 1% milk called Body Boost (extra nutrients? I don’t know…) for $2.99, and they have $1 Off coupons for it behind the counter. i stock up there every few days.

    Hi Fellow Cheapskates,

There is an Aldi’s in Hixson on Hwy. 153. I like to shop there to fill in my needs that I don’t have coupons for or not on sale at Bi-Lo or Publix. Just remember to take your own bags and have a quarter ready for the cart (you will get it back when you return your cart). It’s a really clean store and the produce is very good value. They are set up to take your check card as a debit but not as a credit, so keep that in mind before you go. Either have cash or plan to use your card as a debit but no credit cards.

Also, in Hixson on Hwy. 153 across from the Super Wal-Mart there is a Little Debbie outlet store. Love it! HTH

Hopefully you’ll have better luck next time.

AND – they have the “SMART SUMMERTIME SAVINGS” booklet out – they put it out right as I was leaving so I was able to snag one! Alas, I still can’t find the “Family is it’s own reward” booklet. sigh.

wow! ok had to read all that to make sure i’m not posting something you guys have already talked about. i am new to couponing just a few weeks in and i’m still kind of at the obsessed stage 🙂
so this week bi-lo has their spot shot on sale BOGO. i have two coupons for this for a dollar a piece one from all you magazine and one from publix summer time savings coupon booklet. when i went to the bi-lo in cleveland on ocoee st the spot shots had tags on them for full mail in rebates! so not only will you get back what you paid for them you will make money off of both purchases!
also if you go to publix and they still have the green “back to school” booklets up front there is a coupon in those for $5/3 bandaid purchases and last weeks paper had .50 of bandaids. i have two of those and have looked at the prices of publix bandaids (2.59) -even for the kid ones so with these three coupons you can get 3 boxes of band aids for .77!!!! i’m going as soon as possible but the earliest exp. is july 31 and the band aids aren’t on sale so you should be able to do this as long as you have two .50 coupons and if not it’s still only 1.77 for three boxes which is still great!

Hi Angie! It looks like once again our region was dissed by the coupon-powers that be… We seem to get about half of the coupons that are supposed to be in any given insert- and that’s because manufacturers divvy them out according to some mysterious plan. Brainard CVS anyway and they are always out of the sale stuff. I don’t know when they are going to catch on that they need to order more of the item if it on sale, duh!!! I’m very annoyed!

Ugh, that’s horrible! I was there today too, but luckily didn’t have any problems. Of course that may have been because I only had one transaction since all of the school supplies I wanted were GONE! Have you tried the CVS on Lee Highway near the Sam’s Club? I haven’t tried it yet, but it would be closer than Cleveland…

To Kelly- That is just awful. Way to make us feel like we’re doing something wrong. I would most certainly call corporate about this. I am working with my CVS manager (who shall remain nameless because he helps me figure out deals sometimes) about ordering major supplies ahead of time. I am turning him on to afullcup.com where the coupon inserts are posted way ahead of time, that way he can go and see what items are going to fly off his shelves and order super-early. He’s excited about it and so am I!

I’m sorry to hear about the manager. The last time I went to the Ooltewah publix the manager there with dark hair and glasses wasn’t exactly enthused with all of us “couponers” he was annoyed since the unilever books were gone so quickly with none of the product being bought. He wasn’t outwardly being an a hole but i still felt his comments were inappropriate for customers and the way he said it kinda made me feel bad for doing coupons.

I also had the same problem at the East Brainerd CVS last week and posted on Southern Savers about it. There was not a manager on duty but I spoke with the person in charge. I explained that there was no one else in the store and they were in essence refusing business and turning away customers. I only had 3 transactions with no one else in the store. Her point was other customers were complaining about waiting in line. I said “Maam, look behind me, do you seee anyone else waiting?” It was just obsurd! After a few minutes of talking with her she finally allowed it, however it was a big hassle. I agree we should write corporate. I think they would be interested to their management is turning away business.

Can anyone tell me a CVS that is more open to coupon shopping? I usually go to the
    E. Brainerd store, but admit they can be difficult!

Also, I went to the EB Publix last night and they are out of the BP gas cards. The CS Manager said that I could just save my coupon and use it next week when they get more in! I got two of the Shell, but that will be a great help, especially for the Kraft $50 deal…and you have an extra week to stock up on the gas cards! She actually offered me a couple of adds so I would have coupons for next week! If you are out that way, you might want to pick up an add for more free gas.

About the CVS (or any store) being out of items- don’t forget that they usually get a truck in mid week- CVS gets theirs Thursday I believe- and you can show up early that morning to encounter a fully stocked shelf. ALSO- don’t forget to ask for your raincheck!!! I wrote a post on it a couple weeks ago, just type raincheck into the search bar to find it. Thanks for sharing ladies!

Just a follow up… I did write an email to corporate about the CVS on East Brainerd. I think all of us that have had problems there should do the same!

I wrote a SEATHING letter to corporate about the E. Brainerd CVS. Maybe something will be done. I haven’t heard anything back. Angie let me know if you do.

Please tell me about your next trip to the EB CVS.
Last time I was there they made me feel like a thief.
Alone the way they told me their slogan:”only two transactions” froze the blood in my veins.
    Thanks – Dani

I went to the EB CVS this morning and had a great experience. I was a little nervous after reading about all the trouble everyone has had recently – but it went extremely well. I was back at the school supplies, and the manager (name tag same as the sign outside) came back and told me that he was substituting different binders and pencils because he was out, and reassured me that I would still get the ECBs. When I checked out, he was at the register, and told me that he would be glad to ring up as many transactions as I wanted to make. So …. maybe there’s been a change of heart at the EB store.

    Hi again!
I hope you guys haven’t rushed to get your band aids before wed. b/c the regular ones went on sale for 2.19 a box which made my three boxes free with .43 overage with all three coupons! The kid ones were still full price at 2.59 so those would still have been .77 for three but still great deal!
Also, I went to the Little Debbie store thank you so much for that tip! I left with a bag full of bread and bagels and donuts all for 5.40! I also went to the gas station across from Dairi Kreme and the milk had gone up to 2.99 but still a lot cheaper than most grocery stores! Thanks for the tips!

    • July 17, 2009 2:28 pm

Hey- sorry about that milk Angela- when they run out of the Body Boost, they just fill in the gaps with the $2.99 milk. And at $1.99…they run out alot! Thanks for the bandaid tip!

Oh! OK cool I will have to keep checking then! I also went to the food lion on keith st. ( or would it be stuart st.?) this morning to pick up my .87/lb smithfield ham for 6.59! and they had two liter dr. peppers on sale for 1.09 with a peelie for a $1 off 2 two liters so both two liters only cost 1.09! 🙂

Scored my FREE Bic Triumph Pens today at CVS. The store in Hwy 58 still had plenty of them in blue.

FYI- The Little Debbie Thrift store has Graham Pie Crusts on sale for .50 each or a case of 12 for $5. They have plain and chocolate. They keep for a long time and freeze well.
